So what have I learnt this year?
I personally believe I have learnt so much within my first year at Leeds College of Art and Design. These skills and techniques include-
. Various different approached to design. From collargeing onto a pre-determined figure to manipulating images on photoshop
. I have definitely improved on photoshop previous to this year I had only ever used the computer once or
twice. But now I am able to manipulate patterns within another form. This area does still need working
on however and practicing with in collage and in my own time
shall help to see further progression.
. How to construct a pattern
. How to attack a sleeve to a bodice
. How to manipulate fullness and flair into a garment
. How to attach a facing
. The formation or darts and how they are sewn into a garment
. Different seam type finishes and which ones would be more appropriately used in a garment
. How to construct a working line up
. Although I have constructed designs by working on the stand previous to this year, I feel through
practice I have been able to generate shapes and forms in which I had not previously contemplated.
. Finally I have gained to basic understanding of a craft package and what maybe included to
help portray a more successful brand image
Strength and Weakness realistation
Strengths
. I like how my drawing has managed to progress over the year. I believe I have successfully combined the use of drawing with collarge in order to generate designs individual to me
. Manipulating fabric on the stand helped me through the design realisation process, enabling me to see if my ideas could potentially be constructed
. Persistence
. Questioning my own ideas on reference and design. Being critical has helped me evaluate and alternate ideas in which were not so successful, enabling progression.
. Sheer will and determination
. When receiving a new brief, I make sure that I thoroughly understand what is being asked for. Collecting adequate amounts of research for inspiration from various designers and subject matter.
Weaknesses
. Although I am happy with my style and technique of drawing because the images I draw tend to be precise they take me a while to produce. Angie pointed out that in the fashion industry this would not do as by the time I had drawn a design, the trend would have been and gone. Taking this into consideration I shall begin to look for suitable fashion illustrations in which I will be able to make my own as well as being able to sketch more time efficiently.
. I need to have more self confidence within my work and to be more assertive. At the moment I tend to ask to many questions....Angie is usually astonished when I don't have one for her HA! I ought to learn to go with my initial instinct and work with trial and error.
. When it comes to taking notes on any tutorials and presentations I make them however I always seem to use a different notebook. I need to learn to keep my notes organised. Keeping everything together with mean any vital information won't be lost.
Progressing to second year
In order for my work to improve next year there are several actions in which I must follow.
